As a father, I take my role as a “girl dad” seriously. Two daughters mean I’ve logged hours at Disney on Ice, made pit stops at Sephora, and even survived a solo mission to a Taylor Swift concert.
But there’s one place I draw the line: Claire’s.
The glitter. The chaos. The landfill-bound jewelry.
It’s my personal version of dad hell.
I remember one time my oldest daughter held up a necklace from Claire’s—one of those cheap chains that inevitably ends up in a knotted mess. She asked me to untangle it. And being the incredible dad I am, my first instinct? Wait for her to turn around… and throw it away.
Thankfully, my wife saw me about to commit necklace murder. She gently took it from my hands and patiently worked it free. Eventually, she handed it back to our daughter, completely untangled.
That moment stuck with me.
The necklace wasn’t broken.
It was tangled.
People aren’t broken either.
But they do get tangled.
Tangled in expectations.
Tangled in fear.
Tangled in habits that trap them.
And just like with a necklace, adding tension only makes things worse. You can’t yank your way out of a mess like that. You need margin. You need grace. You need patience.
So if you’re feeling stuck right now, remember:
You’re not broken. You’re just tangled. And untangling is possible—one patient moment at a time.
live freed,
Jordan
